Professional Practice

Andrew is an established family finance specialist with extensive experience of dealing with financial disputes between separating spouses, civil partners and unmarried couples.

Andrew acts as a barrister, arbitrator and early neutral evaluator at private Financial Dispute Resolution appointments.

As a barrister, he is regularly instructed in cases of significant legal and factual complexity, both where the parties’ means are substantial and where the available resources are more modest. He is often instructed in cases involving the alleged concealment or dissipation of assets; nuptial agreements; significant pre-acquired, inherited or other non-matrimonial wealth; farming assets; businesses, large and small; complex and valuable public service, Armed Forces or self-invested pensions; on- and off-shore trusts; jurisdictional issues; and substantial assets overseas.

He acts at all stages of proceedings, at first instance and on appeal, either alone or with leading counsel.

He is consistently recognised in the professional directories as one of the leading junior barristers in his field. He is ranked in ‘Band One’ by Chambers & Partners and ‘Tier One’ by the Legal 500.

Andrew has a particular interest in non-court-based dispute resolution and is frequently appointed as an arbitrator, or a neutral evaluator, and has delivered numerous arbitral awards and non-binding indications in a wide range of financial disputes including several of high value and of significant legal and/or factual complexity.  Andrew qualified as an arbitrator under the Institute of Family Law Arbitrators’ financial scheme in 2016, making him one of the first cohort of Birmingham barristers to do so.  He was subsequently involved in some of the region’s first arbitrated cases, both as an advocate and as the arbitrator. Andrew was the only barrister based outside London and the southeast to be recognised in the Legal 500’s inaugural ‘private FDR judges and arbitrators’ rankings in 2024 which described him as being “extremely thorough, insightful and pragmatic”.  He is also a Resolution-trained family mediator.

He is the Deputy Head of the Family Finance Team at St. Ives Chambers in Birmingham and a member of the Bar Council’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel.
