From Gavin & Stacey to the Bar

07 January 2025

Christmas Day held a bit of added interest this year for Daniel Jeffrey, a barrister at 29 Bedford Row, and colleagues as he appeared on TV in the Gavin and Stacey finale as a member of Smithy’s stag do party.

Dan featured in the highly-anticipated show which saw the BBC draw a huge audience of fans all eager to know whether Smithy had accepted Nessa’s marriage proposal and to see how the long-running show played out.

The story of how he came to be in the show was told in a documentary ‘A Fond Farewell’ all about the finale which aired over the new year period. In it - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0026d9p/gavin-stacey-a-fond-farewell - (at around 41 minutes in) we hear about how Dan portrayed Simon, one of Smithy’s stag-do companions during the first series of the hit show in 2007. A casting director tracked him down and contacted chambers to see whether he would be prepared to make an acting comeback and reprise his role.

The enquiry involved no little amount of detective work as Dan had been using the stage name of Dan Knightley at the time and has since worked for the Ministry of Defence and as a police officer for the Metropolitan Police before training to be a barrister.
